People in this sub will probably disagree with me since it’s a military sub, but the military fucking blows and is a huge hinderance to my life and career. That being said, I know you said you don’t have the time or funds to get your EMT cert - HOWEVER, i would personally recommend you try everything possible to get your EMT on the civilian side before committing to the military. You will also get military bonus points when you start testing with fire departments. Youll be assisting doctors and advanced nurses in treating patients in both emergency and non-emergency situations, preparing blood samples for lab tests, and administering tests that check lung capacity and function. If you are dead set on joining the military, then yes, 68W is absolutely the best choice if you’re hoping to get into fire service. Entry Level As a Respiratory Specialist, your focus will be to help patients with chronic or sudden breathing problems. I’m a firefighter/medic on the civilian side, medical officer on the Guard side. Plus most equipment now has heating/ac and are much more comfortable Civilian side makes good money, most jobs are union and require an apprenticeship but military experience helps cut down time in a lot of places and earns a good pay check. AT for us a lot of the time was civilian side project, we dredged a pond at a local park, we cleared and leveled spots for new roads, we clear cut, dozed, and graded a large section of a military post. Additionally, MOS 68W is unique in that it requires Soldiers to train to. Whereas jobs like Cyber Ops Specialists require a combined entrance exam score of over 200, the combined score required by 91Bs is around 170. If you like learning about machines and using them it's a good MOS and we used equipment every drill. It wasn't a bad job there's a lot of different equipment and jobs to be done so it didn't get too boring. It's all in how you look at it, you never hump a bunch of gear around because you put it in your equipment. Just about everyone I served with was either civilian side equipment operator, carpentry/construction, or elevator technicians(a surprising amount to be honest) and they all make crazy money on the civilian side. ![]()
